Ask yourself to see the contractor’s work. Most problems occur when consumers fail to investigate contractors carefully before hiring them. Ask for an insurance certificate to verify the contractor has general liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance. Make sure the contractor has a permanent work location and has a good reputation with local banks and suppliers. Get more than one estimate and always request a written contract. Beware of any unusual low bids. Have start and end dates in writing. Make sure final payment is not due until job is complete. Beware of anyone that insists on paying cash
Pennsylvania has a statewide, minimum building standard law for all construction, remodeling, additions, alterations and repairs. The law is called the Uniform Construction Code. It requires that all new homes and remodeling work to be completed to the 2003 International Residential Code and provides you with assurance that your home will be built or remodeled to scientifically-tested standards. |
